Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Today’s world is becoming more and more digital every day. This is great, but it also has its pitfalls. Almost every day there are stories about people’s accounts being hacked, or identities being stolen or private information being leaked to the greater public.

Now more than ever it is vital that you protect your online information (hva er personvern). This can be a challenging task because the people who are trying to hack you or steal your information are very experienced and they know a lot more than the average internet user. Unfortunately, this is the new world we live in, but luckily there are many precautions that anyone can take.

Some of these precautions include updating your security settings on all of your online accounts so that you have the maximum level of security on offer. Another is to create long and secure passwords so that they cannot easily be guessed. The easiest and most recommended way, however, is to get a good VPN service provider.

What is a VPN?

A VPN is software that you can install to help encrypt all of your online information. It also protects your identity by adding multiple layers of privacy so that you can stay anonymous (taushetsplikt og personvern)

It has to be said that VPNs are not 100% foolproof, but it is the biggest step a normal person can take in the right direction. Nothing out there is 100% but a VPN is the closest thing there is.

VPNs were originally created and used by big corporations to protect their information in a competitive market. Stealing trade secrets or ideas that have not been patented become a big market and therefore companies had to but some serious money behind VPN development. Now, however, individuals also see the danger of having all your data online. Therefore VPNs have become a crucial part of internet usage.

How does a VPN work?

When we normally connect to the internet we access the web directly through a service provider. This works relatively well, but these connections have low security and it can easily be traced back to your IP address.

When using a VPN you do not access the internet directly. You rather have a secure connection to a server in a different location and you then access the internet from that server. It basically reroutes you through this server which specializes in security. By doing this you make the internet believe that you are actually connecting from the server and not from your true location and IP address. If someone wants to track you they will only find the VPN servers, and none of your information actually gets stored there.

A VPN can also be used to change your location, for example, if you are busy traveling in Asia, you can still have your IP address in the US. This is done to keep subscriptions like Netflix. It can also be done if your country is restricting certain websites then you can change your location to a country that allows access to that particular site.

Getting a good VPN is definitely becoming a necessity if you are serious about your privacy and security.
