At the end of the foundation programme, students will be required to meet the progression requirements for admission to BEng Computer Systems Engineering. This module provides an introduction to core areas of discrete mathematics such as logic, set theory and probability, that form the foundation of computer science and that are required in other modules within the Computing Systems course at Ulster. Each concept is introduced at an abstract level, before being applied to areas of computing such as logic circuits and data analysis. As part of your course induction, you will be provided with details of the organisation and management of the course, including attendance and assessment requirements – usually in the form of a timetable.

In a world in which computers and networks are increasingly embedded in society, computing, information, and communication play a central role in how humans live, work, learn and communicate. Over the past decades, the Nation’s global leadership in computing, communication, and information systems has been driven by our focus on science and technology research and innovation. The importance of this leadership has never been more critical than in the last two years as the U.S. and the world fought to promptly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. For all years, applications are welcomed from holders ofnon-school qualifications,mature candidatesand overseas students. You will study three courses on programming in Java, interactive systems, web design and databases, computer systems, and an elective of your choice.

The concepts of software design, analysis and creation will be explored in the context of real-world examples and software architectures. For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept UKVI approved Secure English Language Tests but we do not require a specific UKVI SELT for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme. As one of our students all of your teaching and assessments are included in your tuition fees, including, lectures/guest lectures and tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions and specialist teaching facilities.

This material provides a general understanding of computers, and it will also prepare students to develop software considering the system perspective, e.g. cost of abstraction and performance implications. Dedicated students of the FdSc in Computer Systems Development will graduate as highly employable individuals with a broad experience of the computing subject, along with a specialist knowledge, and practical skills in computer systems and networking. You’ll also develop a working knowledge of digital forensics, embedded systems and robotics and systems security. We are aware that access to SAT/ACT exams has been limited over the past two years, and that many students have not taken these tests. Taking this into consideration, we will consider relevant performance in Maths and English via the Advanced Placement qualification to replace the SAT/ACT requirement. Should you not be studying an English AP, you will be required to take a further English test in order to meet our entry requirements.

Computers Systems

Our laboratories are designed to be similar to industrial workspaces so you gain an insight into what it is like to work in a professional environment. These include laboratories for autonomous systems, robotics, tomography, bioelectronics, superconductivity and power electronics. We also have facilities for opto- and nano-electronics, additive manufacturing, printed circuit board prototyping and a mechanical workshop. Learning the foundations of electronic, electrical and computer principles gives you a broad understanding of the subject. Later in your degree, you can specialise with a choice of units including embedded electronic systems, computational intelligence or electronic design. Our experience and understanding of the market means we can help you analyse your business objectives, assess your current systems and working practices in order to specify IT solutions that are tailored to meet very specific requirements.

Please contact the International Office who can advise on acceptability for entry to Loughborough courses. Alternatively, we will accept a first year of study at a recognised university of appropriate standing within China as acceptable for entry to the first year of some of our degree courses. Typical offers are based on an average of best 6 grade 12 courses at ‘4U’, ‘4M’ or ‘DU’ in theOntario Secondary School Diplomaand offers typically range from80%-93%with specific subject marks required for some courses. If you’re an international student who does not meet the entry requirements for this course, you have the opportunity to apply for an International Foundation Year in Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield International College. Upon successful completion, you can progress to degree level study at the University of Sheffield.


Where courses have specific A Level subject requirements, these should be taken athigher level. Alternatively, please contact the International Office to check if the Foundation Programme that you are considering taking is acceptable for entry. Many of our courses receive a large number of applications for each available place. We cannot unfortunately always make offers to all applicants who are predicted to achieve/have achieved grades in line with our advertised typical offers. Students will study projects which have been selected to be relevant to their Degree Programme.

Student support

If we make a significant change to your chosen course, we’ll let you know as soon as we can. The University requires a deposit to be paid by International applicants in receipt of an offer to this programme and who require a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies from the University in order that they can apply for a student visa. This is required where the programme is competitive and the deposit is required in order to demonstrate your commitment to attend the programme should you meet all the conditions of your offer. The HCS Group is made up of a variety of academics, researchers and students, all of which have differing skills and research interests, but all of whom are interested in human interaction in real and virtual worlds.

In addition to the specific entry conditions for this course you must also meet the University’s General Entrance Requirements. Within this module concepts such as cloud architectures, hosted technologies, scalable solutions and infrastructure will be explored. Additionally, advanced programming/development concepts facilitating high performance solution development will be examined. This module aims to explore a range of modern development and deployment concepts in the context of scalable and high performance computing services. Human-Computer Interaction is an important topic given that there is a number of novel and emerging user interfaces being developed. More than ever, there are also user demands and expectations for intuitive and usable user interfaces.
